Prettyman Officially Sworn in to Replace Haynes in the House
House Speaker Adrienne A. Jones (D-Baltimore County) swore in Del. Roxane Prettyman (D-Baltimore City) to represent District 44A on Monday afternoon.
“I’m so grateful for this opportunity to serve as the new delegate of District 44A,” Prettyman said after taking her oath of office. “I’ve been working and working and working to serve my community and its constituents for years, and I just pray that I do them justice in serving as the delegate for the district.”
Prettyman, a member of the Baltimore City State Democratic Central Committee, was nominated to complete the term of Del. Keith E. Haynes (D-Baltimore City). Haynes represented southwest and West Baltimore for more than 18 years before abruptly retiring last month.
Haynes was present for the central committee meeting that resulted in Prettyman’s nomination as his successor. He abstained from voting during the session, and his decision to retire before completing the term remains unclear.
“After 18 1/2 years of service, I am retiring from the Maryland House of Delegates,” he said in a statement announcing his decision. “…I would like to thank my constituents for the opportunity to serve them.”
Prettyman grew up in Baltimore’s Sandtown-Winchester neighborhood and serves as community outreach and engagement director of First Mount Calvary Baptist Church and on other community boards.
