Hogan Wastes No Time Filling Washington Co. State Senate Seat

Less than 36 hours after the Washington County Republican Central Committee forwarded the name of Del. Paul D. Corderman (R) to fill a vacancy in the state Senate, Gov. Lawrence J. Hogan Jr. (R) announced Thursday that he is appointing Corderman to the upper chamber.

Corderman, who turns 43 next week, will replace former state Sen. Andrew Serafini (R), who resigned the 2nd District seat last month.

Del. Paul D. Corderman (R-Washington) is about to be elevated to the state Senate.

“I am confident that Delegate Corderman will continue to be a strong advocate for constituents in Washington County in his new role as state senator,” Hogan said in a statement. “I offer him my sincere congratulations, and will continue to work with him to change Maryland for the better.”

Corderman and Del. William Wivell (R) both applied for the Senate vacancy. Corderman’s elevation means the Washington County GOP will soon have to fill his seat in the House of Delegates.

Corderman was appointed to the House in late 2017 after less than two years on the Hagerstown City Council. He is the son of the late state Sen. John P. “Jack” Corderman, who served in the state Senate in the 1970’s and then spent 16 years as a judge on the Washington County Circuit Court.

“I’m looking forward to prioritizing and voicing the concerns and values of the citizens in Washington County,” Corderman said in a Facebook post Wednesday. “Ready to get to work!”
