Fundraiser to Welcome Sen. Smith Home

State Sen. William C. Smith Jr.’s nine-month tour of duty in Afghanistan is due to end around Thanksgiving. A week or so later, the Montgomery County Democrat will hold a “welcome home” political fundraiser.

Smith, a member of the Naval Reserves, is serving in Afghanistan as an intelligence officer. He bowed out of this year’s General Assembly session two weeks early to be deployed.

Smith was given a hero’s send-off both in Annapolis and in his district, and colleagues have been mailing him care packages with reminders of home.

The Dec. 4 fundraiser will be held at the Silver Spring Civic Center from 7-9 p.m. Tickets start at $100; $250 gets a donor on the host committee; $500 makes a contributor a bronze sponsor, $1,000 qualifies as a silver sponsor, and people who donate more than $2,000 will be gold sponsors.
