John Delaney Gets Airtime on ‘The View’

Could this be the break former Maryland congressman John K. Delaney’s presidential campaign is waiting for?

Delaney announced Thursday that he’ll be a guest on ABC-TV’s popular daytime show, “The View,” on June 13.

Just this week, The New York Times Magazine is running an article headlined, “How ‘The View’ Became the Most Important Political TV Show in America.”

“‘The View'” has hosted politicians almost since its start, but until recently it was not taken seriously by them,” the article says. “When Barack Obama went on the show in 2010, making history as the first sitting president to appear on a daytime talk show, Gov. Ed Rendell of Pennsylvania, a Democrat, blasted the decision by saying there ‘should be a little bit of dignity to the presidency.’ In the past few years, however, ‘The View’ has become a place where Democrats and Republicans alike go to introduce themselves to a national audience, an essential campaign stop. Twelve of the 26 people who have announced that they are running for president in 2020 have already been on the show…”

Delaney continues to work his longshot presidential bid hard. He completed his 28th visit to Iowa this week and will spend the Memorial Day weekend stumping New Hampshire.

Delaney was the first major Democrat to enter the 2020 presidential race, in July 2017, and joked for months that he had “cleared the field.” That’s no longer the case — as more than 20 other Democrats with some level of stature have joined the presidential chase.

By all accounts, Delaney has a solid ground game in the early states that matter the most. But he, like so many of his foes, will have to have a breakout moment soon to pierce the public consciousness and the punditocracy — perhaps during the televised debates in late June or late July.

His appearance on “The View” becomes an additional opportunity.
