Not the Same Old Storey for National Legislative Group

And you thought state Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller Jr. (D-Calvert) has had a long tenure: The National Conference of State Legislatures, which provides the Maryland General Assembly with a lot of help year after year – from issue research to guidance on best practices to political intelligence – is getting its first new executive director in 42 years.

The NCSL announced last week that Tim Storey, a longtime staffer at the organization, has been tapped to replace William Pound following a nationwide search. When he steps down in mid-July, Pound will have led NCSL for 42 years.

“Tim is clearly the best person to lead NCSL and continue to help states remain strong both at home and in Washington,” said Illinois state Sen. Toi Hutchinson (D), the NCSL president. “Tim, who has a track record of proven leadership, will lead an amazing team to support my fellow legislative colleagues and legislative staff as they focus on navigating complex policy issues.”

Storey is currently the director of State Services for NCSL. The State Services Division includes several core programs: fiscal research, the Center for Legislative Strengthening, institutional studies, leaders’ services, legislative and staff training, staff services and redistricting and elections. He has spent the past 30 years working for and studying legislatures—specializing in elections, redistricting, legislative organization and leadership.

Storey’s appointment must still receive final approval by the NCSL Executive Committee during its June meeting. Assuming he is approved, his first big test will be the annual NCSL summer conference in early August, held this year in Nashville. Parenthetically, Dolly Parton will be one of the keynote speakers.
