Teachers Union to Hold ‘Un-Appreciation Day’

Tuesday was National Teacher Appreciation Day in America, but Wednesday will be “Teacher Un-Appreciation Day” in Prince George’s County.

The Prince George’s County Educators’ Association will hold a protest after school on Wednesday, as the union and Prince George’s County Public Schools remain in contract negotiations.

The union said teachers have been undervalued and underpaid by the school system.

Prince George’s County Educators’ Association President Theresa Mitchell Dudley said the school district loses 1,200 to 1,500 educators each year but is not focused on retention.

“There are nearly 6,000 educators who are behind on pay scale due to lost steps over the years that PGCPS has consistently underfunded our classrooms,” Mitchell Dudley said in a statement announcing the protest. “If they appreciate educators, don’t say it on one day or one week, show it year around by making the investment.”

The union says the Board of Education’s salary proposal does not include restoration of step increases to salaries and does not include a proposal from the union to increase planning time for educators.
