Political Notes: Moore Touts Latest Fundraising Totals, Pro-Choice Icon Backs O’Malley
Wes Moore, who led the large Democratic gubernatorial field in fundraising earlier this year, is already boasting of his latest haul.
With campaign finance reports not due to be filed at the State Board of Elections until next Tuesday, the Moore campaign said Wednesday that he would report having added $2.5 million to his campaign war chest since mid-January,
That would bring the total raised by Moore and his running mate, former Del. Aruna Miller (D-Montgomery), to $7.3 million overall. The campaign said it had $2.1 million on hand for the six weeks before the July 19 primary.
“I am a firm believer that you campaign how you govern, and when you look at the energy and momentum around this campaign, when you look at the endorsements we have earned from leaders across this state, and when you look at the support we have received, it is clear that this people-powered movement can win in July, win in November, and bring the urgency and vision Maryland families need to the Governor’s office in Annapolis next year,” Moore said in a statement.
Generally, campaigns only release their fundraising totals early when they have something to brag about. But the Moore campaign has yet to make its full finance report, which is likely to be hundreds of pages long, available.
The candidate noted that his campaign treasury is set to get another boost next week, when mega-star Oprah Winfrey joins Moore for a virtual conversation next Tuesday evening, just as campaign finance reports are being filed with the board of elections.
The Moore campaign said that over 70% of contributions it received were of $100 or less.
Cecile Richards for O’Malley in AG race
Former Baltimore City Judge Katie Curran O’Malley and U.S. Rep. Anthony Brown continue to trade high-profile endorsements in their primary race for attorney general.
With abortion rights uppermost on the minds of many Democratic voters, O’Malley is touting her endorsement this week from Cecile Richards, the former national president of Planned Parenthood and a progressive leader. Richards is currently co-chair of American Bridge, a powerful liberal political action committee.
“Katie has the right legal experience to staunchly defend our reproductive rights!” Richards tweeted. “She will be an excellent AG for the state.”
O’Malley in response tweeted: “Cecile Richards has dedicated her life and career to fighting for reproductive healthcare. I am honored to have her support, and with #RoevWade on the line, I will fight by her side to ensure that all women have the right to choose.”
In addition to their solidarity over abortion rights, O’Malley and Richards come from political families. O’Malley is the wife of former Gov. Martin O’Malley (D) and the daughter of former Attorney General Joe Curran (D), while Richards is the daughter of the iconic late Texas Gov. Ann Richards (D).
