Maryland’s chapter of the Sierra Club announced its new officers this week — and the group has elected the youngest woman ever to serve as chapter leader.
Rosa Hance, 31, is taking over as chair of the Maryland chapter. She’s an educator from St. Mary’s County who has been chair of the Sierra Club Southern Maryland group and was vice chair of the statewide chapter.
Hance takes over from Brian Ditzler, a longtime environmental and consumer activist from Montgomery County.
“The energy and motivation of our leadership and our membership is palpable,” Hance said in a statement. “I think we’re going to have a very successful year as we fight to protect our natural resources and ecosystems, push for a just and equitable transition from fossil fuels, and work for a more environmentally sustainable future for the people of Maryland.”
Moving into the vice chair slot is Randy Lyons, a longtime Sierra Club activist who has spent three of the last five years as chapter treasurer.
