U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) has endorsed former U.S. and Maryland Labor Secretary Tom Perez in the Democratic gubernatorial primary.

“Tom is a compassionate leader, a great listener, and someone who isn’t afraid to do the hard work governing requires, and I’m proud to endorse him,” Pelosi said in a statement Monday.

Perez and Pelosi worked together under the Obama administration when he fronted the Labor Department, the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division and, more recently, the Democratic National Committee.
“…[T]rust me when I say that he will be the leader Maryland needs to push for progressive change and deliver,” the House speaker said.

A Baltimore native, Pelosi has deep roots in government — her father, Thomas D’Alesandro Jr., was a member of the Maryland congressional Delegation from 1939 to 1947 before serving three terms as mayor of Baltimore. Following in their father’s footsteps, her brother, Thomas D’Alesandro III served as the city’s mayor from 1967 to 1971.

In a statement, Perez thanked Pelosi for the endorsement, calling her a “transformational leader who has spent her entire career in fierce pursuit of justice for America’s children and families.”

“She has been on the frontlines to defend our democracy, and I’m so thankful for her leadership here in Maryland, across our country, and around the world,” Perez said. “I could not be more proud to receive her endorsement.”
