Over the past few weeks I’ve been traveling across Maryland. From town halls to forums, from campaign events to rallies, I’ve had the privilege to speak to hundreds of patriotic Marylanders. During these times, I’ve prided myself on being a listener more than anything. I’ve taken this stance because I can do all of the research, I can read every poll and scour every primary news source, but it’s not until you look someone eye-to-eye that you really get a grasp for the levity of the times we are living in.
What I’ve found is that while the world continues to spin, and the seasons continue to change, people all across this district are still struggling. Whether it’s soaring medical costs, low family-wage-paying jobs, the opioid epidemic, increased costs of living, violent crime rates or just the overall toxic climate in America, people are worried about the future.
And it’s these notions of uncertainty and anxiety and in some cases fear, that I’ve decided to take a stand and boldly enter the arena. Not for myself, but so that every family, worker, student, veteran and senior citizen knows they will always have someone standing with and in front of them, or as former West Point professor Dave Grossman calls them, “sheepdogs.”
We have real problems in this country that need real solutions. The status quo of the past decades in our district simply isn’t working. Because it isn’t enough to simply stand against something, but people today need their leaders to stand for something. And I believe that in the times we live in today, as important as it is for Americans to exercise their civic duty, it is just as important to exercise this representative democracy itself.
And it is in this spirit that I decided to go against the tide and stand up for the values that I believe America was, is and will forever be founded on. An America that is on the move. An America that belongs to every citizen. An America where the quality of your message is not beholden to the depths of your pockets or your family name. And most importantly, an America whose greatest days are still ahead of us.
Across this district, I’ve seen time and time again that Marylanders are tenacious, tireless and determined. But more importantly, they expect their leaders to display the exact same dogged, unyielding, fighting spirit to bring true change and progress to Maryland and this country. Marylanders are calling for a progressive fighter. And I’m ready to answer the call.
