The project, still in the early planning stages, could be unveiled on the front lawn on or near where another statue once honored the author of a Supreme Court decision that declared slaves were property and not human beings.

Official portrait was removed to be enlarged after briefly hanging in the State House.

After eight years, the official portraits of the former governor and his wife will take their place inside the State House and governor’s mansion.

Renovation of the old Treasury Building, closed to the public for 50 years, is part of a $22.2 million State House project.
