District 14 Re-Election Slate Wins Backing of Raskin, Sarbanes
The four members of the District 14 delegation announced Wednesday that they intend to seek re-election as a team in 2022.
The group includes:
- Sen. Craig J. Zucker (D), a member of the Budget & Taxation Committee. He has served in the Senate since 2016, after being elected twice to the House of Delegates.
-
Del. Anne R. Kaiser (D), the chairwoman of the House Ways & Means Committee. She will be seeking her sixth term next year.
-
House Majority Leader Eric G. Luedtke (D), who will be seeking his fourth term.
-
Del. Pam Queen (D) serves as head of the House Economic Matters subcommittee on Banking, Consumer Protection and Commercial Law. She has served since her appointment in 2016 and will be seeking her second four-year term.
In announcing their decision to run as the “District 14 Team,” the lawmakers said, “We are proud to work together on behalf of Montgomery County’s 14th District, and hope to have an opportunity to continue to serve.”
Lawmakers from a single party frequently seek re-election as a slate. Doing so allows them to raise money and print campaign literature together. It can also discourage potential rivals from running — and make it harder for challengers to gain traction.
Zucker said there were no such motivations in forming a slate this early.
“We’re really close friends,” he said. “We wanted to get out there early so people knew we were serious.”
The two members of Congress whose districts overlap with the 14th district issued a statement of support for the slate.
”We are proud to support this outstanding group of public servants,” said Reps. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) and John Sarbanes (D-Md.).
“They have been strong partners with us on Capitol Hill, and have been effective advocates for their district in Annapolis. During these challenging times, we need leaders like them in public office.”
The 14th District stretches along the eastern border of Montgomery County, near the MD 650 corridor, from Prince George’s County to Frederick County.
The General Assembly is expected to approve new district boundaries early next year in time for the 2022 primaries, which will be held on June 28.
