A Plea to Our Readers: Support Nonprofit Journalism
Today marks the start of NewsMatch – an ambitious national campaign to promote independent, nonprofit news sites and the critical work of democracy: informing citizens what is happening in their state and their communities.
We at Maryland Matters are grateful and honored to continue this work.
Without sites like Maryland Matters, a lot of stories would never be told.
As a nonprofit, we depend on the generosity of our readers – individuals and charitable foundations that make our work possible.
For that, thank you.
We are thrilled to participate, for the third year in a row, in NewsMatch.
Starting Friday, contributions of up to $1,000 will be doubled thanks to NewsMatch. This national nonprofit is funded by the Democracy Fund, the Knight Foundation and others. Last year, Maryland Matters was pleased to earn $30,000 from NewsMatch!
When I launched Maryland Matters, I knew that news about our state couldn’t wait.
And neither will you, I hope, when it comes to once again supporting our independent news site for the state we love.
Please know that I turn to you for one reason alone: we need to raise more money for the year ahead. It’s as simple as that.
I hope I can count on you to support the news you read, enjoy and depend on six days a week.
With a great deal of help from readers and supporters, Maryland Matters has grown from a worthy concept to a site run by volunteers to a well-respected site with veteran reporters publishing original news and commentary six days a week.

Founding Editor Josh Kurtz is a veteran chronicler of Maryland politics and government. He began covering the State House in 1995 for The Gazette newspapers, and has been writing about state and local politics ever since. He was an editor at Roll Call, the Capitol Hill newspaper, for eight years, and for eight years was the editor of E&E Daily, which covers energy and environmental policy on Capitol Hill. For 6 1/2 years Kurtz wrote a weekly column on state politics for Center Maryland and has written for several other Maryland publications as well. Kurtz regularly gives speeches and appears on TV and radio shows to discuss Maryland politics.
