The courts’ prior names, in use for centuries, didn’t convey their role in the state’s legal system, critics say

People of color make up 43% of Maryland’s Court of Appeals, which is the state’s highest court, while 57% of the justices are women.

With these nominations, Gov. Hogan has now made seven appointments to the Court of Appeals, and only one of the sitting judges will have been appointed by former Gov. O’Malley.
