Business Group Makes Endorsements in Key State Senate Races

Craig Giangrande

The National Federation of Independent Business announced this week that its Maryland political action committee has added 16 candidates to its list of legislative endorsements. The announcement comes on top of the 40-plus endorsements the business group offered legislative candidates shortly before the June primaries. “These candidates know what it takes to create jobs, and they understand the challenges that small-business owners face in Maryland,” said Tim Goodrich, executive director of NFIB’s state government relations, in a statement.  Craig Giangrande

In Senate races, the newly-endorsed candidates are all Republicans: Sens. Robert Cassilly (Harford) and Bryan Simonaire (Anne Arundel); Jack Bailey, a retired police officer running in the 29th District in Southern Maryland; Bill Dotson, a businessman running in Charles County’s 28th District; and Craig Giangrande, a businessman challenging Sen. Ronald N Young (D-Frederick) for the 3rd District seat, one of the most competitive races in the country. In June, the NFIB endorsed 11 Republican senators seeking reelection. Sen. Steve Waugh (R) lost the GOP primary to Bailey. The rest of the senators are heavily favored to win reelection. NFIB in June also endorsed Del. Mary Beth Carozza (R-Lower Shore), who is taking on Sen. James N. Mathias Jr. (D) in another marquee Senate race, and Del. Christopher R. West (R-Baltimore County), who is bidding for the open state Senate seat in the 42nd District. The business group at the time endorsed 31 House Republican incumbents. This week’s House endorsements include 11 more incumbents seeking reelection, including three Democrats – Del. Eric Bromwell of Baltimore County, Del. Ned Carey of Anne Arundel County, and Del. C.T. Wilson of Charles County. Click here for a list of NFIB’s latest endorsements.
