Republican County Execs Have Huge Fundraising Edge Over Democratic Foes

Three Republicans who were elected to county executive positions in 2014 after serving in the General Assembly have significant fundraising advantages over their Democratic opponents as they seek second terms, newly-released campaign finance statements show. All three of the Republicans – Harford County Executive Barry Glassman, Howard County Executive Allan H. Kittleman and Anne Arundel County Executive Steven R. Schuh – are currently favored to win reelection. But Kittleman in particular could be vulnerable if a national Democratic political wave rises in November. Schuh and Kittleman in particular have been formidable fundraisers. Schuh began the fundraising period in mid-January with $1,062,020 in his campaign account. He raised $268,134 in the subsequent four months, spent $240,577 during that same period, and reported $1,089,577 in his campaign account as of mid-May. Schuh said more than half of the approximately 500 contributions he received during the latest fundraising period came from Anne Arundel County, and many totaled $250 or less.  Howard County Executive Allan H. Kittleman  “This sustained fundraising momentum and engagement in our campaign from across the county is a clear indication that Anne Arundel County citizens believe our administration’s plan is working,” Schuh said. Schuh’s Democratic opponent, horse farmer Steuart Pittman, who joined the race in December, reported $269,977 in the bank earlier this month, after raising $211,168 since mid-January.  A Democrat was last elected county executive in 2002 – Janet S. Owens. In Howard County, Kittleman reported raising $118,231 since mid-January, and finished the fundraising period with $822,692 in the bank. “When you look at the progress his campaign has made thus far in 2018, and account for the amount of support he has in the community, I think most people would agree Allan Kittleman is very well positioned heading into this election.” said the executive’s campaign manager, Sean Murphy. Kittleman will face County Councilman Calvin Ball (D) in November. Ball raised $85,568 from mid-January to mid-May, and reported $250,767 on hand. In Harford County, Glassman reported $382,364 in the bank after raising $51,250 since mid-January. Harford County has become a Republican stronghold in recent years, and Glassman faces only token opposition from Democrat Maryann Connaghan Forgan. She reported just $244 in her campaign account. [email protected]
