Newly-installed Senate Minority Leader Bryan W. Simonaire (R-Anne Arundel) and Senate Minority Whip Michael J. Hough (R-Frederick) announced GOP caucus leadership positions Thursday for the upcoming 2021 legislative session.
Simonaire and Hough said that Sen. George C. Edwards (R-Garrett) will be the GOP caucus chairman. Sen. Edward R. Reilly (R-Anne Arundel) will be assistant minority leader. Sen. Christopher R. West (R-Baltimore County) will be caucus parliamentarian, and his fellow Baltimore County senator, Johnny Ray Salling, will be caucus chaplain. Sen. Mary Beth Carozza (R-Lower Shore) will be the policy and communications chair.
The new GOP leaders also appointed the ranking members for the four Senate standing committees: Edwards for Budget and Taxation; Sen. Jason C. Gallion (R-Harford) for Education, Health and Environmental Affairs; Sen. J.B. Jennings (R-Harford), the former minority leader, for Finance; and Sen. Robert Cassilly (R-Harford) for Judicial Proceedings.
“Our Caucus is a team of exceptional legislators and professionals who bring their diversity of experience to their work in the Maryland Senate,” Simonaire said in a statement. “We are proud to have the following
members in caucus leadership roles as we work to amplify the minority voice in the Legislature and work within our two-party system for the benefit of all Marylanders.”
