UMMS Launches Campaign to changeUP Health Care in Prince George’s and Southern Maryland
University of Maryland Capital Region Health has launched a campaign to provide better, more comprehensive health care options to Prince George’s County and Southern Maryland residents in 2021 and 2022.
“We understand that everyone wants a healthier future … for themselves, their family, their community. And, we’d like to assure you that we’re taking every step possible to changeUP how we care for you … today and tomorrow,” wrote Nat Richardson, Jr., president and CEO of University of Maryland Capital Region Health, in a letter posted to its website.
The changeUP campaign is promising better care to Marylanders by opening several new facilities in the Capital Region, including primary and specialty care services at the new UM Capital Region Health Medical Group at National Harbor, expanded health care resources at the UM Bowie Health Center and an updated facility for the UM Laurel Medical Center, which is set to open next year.
“We’re changing up everything … so you no longer need to travel outside the region for the quality care you deserve,” Richardson said. “Because here, we believe amazing health care can do so much more than make you feel better. It can bring our community together.”
Another major component of the changeUP campaign is the UM Capital Region Medical Center in Largo, which officially opened Saturday, June 12.
The new facility, which replaces the Prince George’s Hospital Center in Cheverly, took more than 10 years to come to fruition.
The medical center is accessible by public transit, including Metrorail, and touts a host of state-of-the-art features, including a heart and vascular institute, a stroke center, an entire floor dedicated to infant and maternal health, a Level II trauma center (which includes emergency surgery) and both inpatient and outpatient mental health services.
In a phone interview before the hospital’s ribbon-cutting ceremony, U.S. Rep. Anthony Brown (D), a champion for the project, called its opening “a big win.”
“There are few things that public officials do during the course of their career where they can look back and say, ‘That was a big win for the people who I serve,’” Brown said. “We all have wins on behalf of the people we serve, but you only get a handful of big wins. This was a big win.”
