Matory Racks Up Endorsements from Sauerbrey, Lawmakers in 7th District Primary
Is attorney and conservative activist Liz Matory, who has run for Congress three different times in three different districts over the last three election cycles, the Republican establishment choice in the special election to replace the late U.S. Rep. Elijah E. Cummings (D-Md.)?
Matory, one of seven Republicans competing in the Feb. 4 special GOP primary, rolled out a set of endorsements Tuesday from elected officials and two-time GOP gubernatorial nominee Ellen R. Sauerbrey, a conservative icon.
“I usually do not endorse before primaries, but this election is too important not to officially support our great candidate, Liz Matory,” said Del. Trent Kittleman (R-Howard), said in a statement provided by the Matory campaign.
Del. Lauren Arikan (R-Baltimore County) said returning to the legislative session in Annapolis reminds her of the dearth of strong conservative voices in the state.
“I am eerily reminded of how difficult it is to defend our civil liberties and conservative values with only one Republican in our federal delegation,” she said.
Besides Sauerbrey and the two lawmakers, Matory said she has also been endorsed by the Howard County Council’s lone Republican, David Yungman, by former state Sen. Gail H. Bates (R-Howard), and by former New Carrollton councilmember Lisa Kim, who now lives in Howard County.
Matory was the Republican nominee for Congress in the 2nd District in 2018, taking 31% of the vote against Rep. C.A. Dutch Ruppersberger (D). In 2016, she unsuccessfully sought the Republican nomination in the 8th District after briefly running for the seat as an independent. In 2014, she sought the Democratic nomination for a seat in the House of Delegates.
“This particular special election is the best chance that conservatives and even moderates will have to select their representative,” the Matory campaign said in its statement Tuesday.
In her news release, Matory noted that she is the only candidate in either party in the 7th District special election who has been the nominee of a major party in a congressional election in the 21st century.
