Maryland Matters on the Air

Maryland Matters Founding Editor Josh Kurtz joined hosts Nestor Aparicio and Don Mohler on a recent free-wheeling episode of their podcast, “Baltimore Positive.”

Roughly speaking, the topic was the Republican Party heading into the 2022 elections.

The impetus for the conversation was a column Kurtz wrote earlier this month that pegged Republican Allan Kittleman’s decision to run for Howard County executive next year to the notion that Democrats’ declining poll numbers nationally could impact political races in Maryland.

Kittleman won an upset victory in the county executive race in 2014, a good year for Republicans nationally, and was ousted by Democrat Calvin Ball four years later, a good year for Democrats nationally. Even though Howard County has become increasingly Democratic over the years, it’s still a bellwether in its countywide races.

The 28-minute discussion also touched on the direction Maryland Republicans will take in 2022, along with a look at Republican Gov. Lawrence J. Hogan Jr.’s role in a national GOP that is still dominated by former President Trump.
