Keeping an Eye on Close Races

A week after Election Day, some races in Maryland are narrowing as election boards continue the process of counting absentee and provisional ballots.

In Anne Arundel County’s District 33, Democrat Heather Bagnall was trailing incumbent Republican Del. W. Anthony McConkey by 645 votes at the end of election night.

But with absentee and provisional ballots being counted, she is now trailing by 131 votes, according to an update posted on Bagnall’s campaign Facebook page Tuesday night.

“I cannot express what it means for this district or for me personally to know how close we are, and that more importantly, we are still very much in this race,” Bagnall wrote in an email to supporters. “No matter the outcome, we have achieved a sea change in Anne Arundel County on which we shall continue to build.”

McConkey and Bagnall are in the third and fourth place in the three-seat legislative district.

The final counting of absentee ballots in the state is scheduled for Friday, after which results statewide will be certified.

In Harford County, Democrat Mary-Dulany James, a former delegate, is closing the gap with incumbent Republican Sen. Robert Cassilly.

James trailed Cassilly by 399 votes on Election Day. With the first absentee canvass and provisional votes counted, she trails by 259.

In the legislative subdistrict of 34A, Democrat Steve Johnson may take one of the two seats from incumbent Republican Del. Glen Glass. Johnson is leading Glass by 129 votes for the second spot. Democratic Del. Mary Ann Lisanti is in first place.
