House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (D) endorsed Rep. Anthony G. Brown’s bid for Maryland Attorney General on Thursday, citing his colleague’s civil rights work.
“Anthony has demonstrated tireless efforts as a champion for the well-being of families, civil rights, and equal justice for all,” Hoyer said in a statement. “He’s never backed down from the hard fights, continuously pushing for what’s right and what our state needs to move forward and to remain the best place to live, work, and raise a family.”
Hoyer cited Brown’s advocacy for LGBTQ rights, equal pay for women, “and to create a more equitable military justice system for minority servicemembers and survivors of sexual assault.”
“He’s spoken out about the need to correct historic injustices,” Hoyer said. “He fights for our public servants and for the many Marylanders who work as federal employees. Moreover, Anthony has always made the centerpiece of his service a commitment to ensuring that families and children have every opportunity to thrive and access opportunities to get ahead.”
A Harvard-trained lawyer who served in the U.S. Army, Brown was elected to two terms as Maryland’s lieutenant governor and represented Prince George’s County in the House of Delegates from 1999 to 2007.
Hoyer, the dean of Maryland’s congressional delegation, becomes the third lawmaker to endorse Brown in the race. Reps. David Trone (D) and Kweisi Mfume (D) are also backing Brown’s bid for the seat being vacated by Brian E. Frosh (D).
Frosh announced in October that he will not seek a third term.
Former Baltimore judge and Maryland first lady Katie Curran O’Malley launched her bid for attorney general with a video on Wednesday. State Sen. William C. Smith Jr. (D-Montgomery) is considering a run for A.G. as well.
Republican James F. Shalleck of Montgomery County, a former federal prosecutor, is the only candidate to have formally filed for the post.
