Gov. Lawrence J. Hogan Jr. (R) announced Thursday that he has appointed Andrew N. Pollak, the chair of the Department of Orthopaedics at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, as chair of the Maryland Health Care Commission. Pollak, who currently serves as vice chair, will succeed Dr. Robert Moffit as chair when Moffit steps down at the end of this week.
Pollak completed his undergraduate and medical education at Northwestern University, his residency in Integrated Orthopaedic Surgery at the University Hospitals of Cleveland, and a fellowship in orthopaedic traumatology at University of California-Davis Medical Center.
Pollak is currently serving his second term on the Maryland Health Care Commission, which began in 2015. He was initially appointed to the Commission in 2003 for a four-year term by then-Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. (R).
The commission, an independent state regulatory agency whose mission is to plan for health system needs and improve access to care, has 15 members who are appointed by the governor, an annual budget of $16 million, and a staff of 54 employees.
Pollak’s nomination must be approved by the state Senate.
