Republican Gov. Lawrence J. Hogan Jr. thinks President Donald Trump’s Twitter comments about four congresswomen earlier this week were “terrible and unbecoming of a president. Totally inappropriate.”
Hogan made that comment Tuesday evening to WJZ in Baltimore.
On Wednesday morning at the annual J. Millard Tawes Crab and Clam Bake in Crisfield, Hogan – who briefly considered a primary run against Trump – said he didn’t have much more to add.
“I don’t have anything else to say about it. I think it’s pretty clear what my thoughts are on the president’s tone and the things he says and the way he says them. But I’m just tired of talking about it,” Hogan said. “One of the things that I am completely frustrated with is the divisive politics and the angry rhetoric on both sides of the aisle and I just wish that we could really focus on the problems instead of [it being] all we talk about is tweets and what people are calling each other.”
On Monday, the Maryland Democratic Party had called on Hogan to denounce the tweets.
Trump’s language in the tweet about four freshman Democratic lawmakers of color “thrusts a dagger in the heart of our diverse democracy,” Maryland Democratic Party Chair Maya Rockeymoore Cummings said Monday. “The President’s attack is a calculated strategy to energize his base who are clearly receptive to white nationalist arguments that reinforce the blasphemous notion that to be legitimately American is to be a white American.”
