After focusing his reelection campaign on appealing to women — especially moderate and liberal women disgusted with President Trump — Gov. Lawrence J. Hogan Jr. (R) is discussing his success with his fellow Republican governors.
According to The Daily 202 column in The Washington Post, Hogan appeared at a panel discussion at the Republican Governors Association meeting this week with Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker (R) on how they, as Republicans, survived in blue states in a Democratic year. Hogan talked at length about the group of 110 Democratic and independent women his campaign assembled for regular discussions about issues and their voting inclinations.
“We won women,” Hogan told his colleagues. “As a result, in spite of this huge blue wave, I became the second Republican governor reelected in the entire 242-year history of our state.”
Maryland Matters was the first media outlet to report on the Hogan campaign’s focus on women voters in the aftermath of the election.
Meanwhile, the Associated Press has a fascinating article about redistricting machinations and political muscle in Wisconsin. Recall that Wisconsin’s legislative map was hauled before the Supreme Court at roughly the same time that Maryland’s congressional map was. And the justices decided to send the Wisconsin case, like Maryland’s, back to a lower court.
Now, while a trial awaits on the Wisconsin map, the AP reports that Republican lawmakers, who control both chambers of the state legislature, may be maneuvering to cut incoming Democratic Gov. Tony Evers out of the redistricting process.
It will be interesting to monitor the redistricting fight in the Dairy State as the battle continues here in Maryland.
