Former Delegate Eyeing District 4 Congressional Vacancy

Add former state Del. Angela M. Angel (D-Prince George’s) to the list of Democrats eyeing a run for the newly vacant 4th District congressional seat.

Angel last week created a campaign committee with the Federal Election Commission, enabling her to begin raising money for a possible 2022 race. Angel has not yet filed her candidacy papers with the Maryland State Board of Elections — but then, neither have Del. Jazz M. Lewis (D-Prince George’s) or former Prince George’s state’s attorney Glenn F. Ivey, who have already announced their plans to run.

Angel has yet to make a formal announcement. The closest she came to addressing the race was a Facebook post shortly after 4th District Rep. Anthony G. Brown (D) announced his intention to run for attorney general in 2022 rather than seek reelection.

“So excited to hear Anthony G. Brown is running for Attorney General,” she wrote. “It’s always great to see fellow Prince Georgians stepping forward. Just a few short years ago we were out on the trail….It’s time to dust off those shoes.”

Angel on the same day posted a picture of the late New York congresswoman Shirley Chisholm, a political trailblazer, on her Facebook page.

Angel, 41, served one term in the House of Delegates, representing District 25 in the center of the county from 2015 to 2019. She ran unsuccessfully for the state Senate in 2018, losing the Democratic primary to now-Sen. Melony G. Griffith (D), 55% to 37%.

A mother of five, Angel is an attorney and political strategist who is listed on social media as a senior advisor to the Black Lives Matter political action committee.

The 4th District as currently drawn takes in about half of Prince George’s County and a portion of Anne Arundel County. Although former Rep. Donna F. Edwards (D) has been silent on the possibility of joining the race, several Democratic leaders believe she is at least exploring a run.

Maryland’s 10-member congressional delegation is all-male.
