The biggest Republican fight in Maryland next year may be the three-way race for Cecil County executive, where incumbent Alan McCarthy is trying to turn back two challengers.
On Tuesday, one of the biggest names in Maryland Republican politics got involved in the primary: Former Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. endorsed McCarthy for a second term.
“Alan McCarthy is the leader Cecil County needs,” Ehrlich said. “His fiscally responsible, conservative policies are helping ensure the county reaches its full potential.”
Ehrlich will headline a fundraiser for McCarthy on Jan. 9 at the Wellwood in Charlestown. There, he will autograph copies of his latest book, Bet You Didn’t See That One Coming: Obama, Trump, and the End of Washington’s Regular Order.
“I am humbled and honored to have Governor Ehrlich’s support as we continue our work to make Cecil County great,” said McCarthy, who is using a variation of President Trump’s “Make America Great Again” as a campaign slogan. “As governor, he understood that economic development and fiscal responsibility are the key to prosperity.”
McCarthy is squaring off against Danielle Hornberger, an aide to U.S. Rep. Andrew P. Harris (R-Md.) and Ewing McDowell, who works for the Maryland Department of Commerce. The winner of the April 28 primary will be the overwhelming favorite in the general election.
