It’s Wear Orange Weekend, an extension of National Gun Violence Awareness Day, which falls this year on Friday. To mark Wear Orange Weekend, the Maryland chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America will host community events across the state to honor the lives of those affected by gun violence.
Skylines and key buildings will also turn orange beginning on Friday evening, including HarborView Towers Condominium, Anthem House, The Pillar Worship Center, Johns Hopkins Homewood Campus Entrance, Bloomberg School of Public Health, and Baltimore City Hall in Baltimore; Arundel Center and City Hall in Annapolis; Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia; the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Frederick and Evangelical Reformed United Church of Christ in downtown Frederick; and First Presbyterian church in Cumberland.
Orange is the symbol of the anti-gun violence movement, and the color is worn by activists to honor victims of gun violence.
Several local elected officials have issued proclamations declaring Friday as the fifth annual National Gun Violence Awareness Day.
Hundreds of Wear Orange events will take place across the country on Saturday and Sunday – including several in Maryland on Saturday. Participants and speakers at the Maryland events will include gun violence survivors, community and faith leaders, law enforcement officers, Moms Demand Action volunteers, students and families.
