Catherine Curran O’Malley Opens Fundraising Committee

Former Baltimore City District Court Judge and Maryland first lady Catherine “Katie” Curran O’Malley, who recently retired from the bench, opened a 2022 fundraising committee on Monday.

A space on the candidate committee registration form to detail the office O’Malley is seeking was left blank, though sources close to her have said she’s considering a run for attorney general, among other potential political options.

O’Malley has not publicly announced plans to run for the office once held by her father, J. Joseph Curran Jr. (D), though opening the campaign committee will allow her to begin fundraising.

Attorney General Brian E. Frosh (D) announced last month that he won’t seek a third term in 2022.

U.S. Rep. Anthony G. Brown (D), who was lieutenant governor to O’Malley’s husband, is the only declared candidate so far on the Democratic side. He announced an endorsement from Prince George’s County Executive Angela D. Alsobrooks (D) on Monday.

James F. Shalleck, a former federal prosecutor from Montgomery County, has filed to run as a Republican.

The candidate filing deadline is Feb. 22.
