Buttigieg Rolls Out List of Md. Endorsements

Timed to coincide with the Maryland Democratic Party’s gala Saturday, the presidential campaign of South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg is rolling out a list of Maryland elected officials who have endorsed him.

Former state Democratic chairwoman Susan W. Turnbull has already been with Buttigieg for several months, but the roster of supporters has grown to include key state lawmakers, led by House Appropriations Committee Chairwoman Maggie L. McIntosh (D-Baltimore City) and House Judiciary Chairman Luke V. Clippinger (D-Baltimore City) — two of the most prominent openly gay elected officials in the state.

Also on the list: Dels. Kirill Reznik (D-Montgomery) and Patrick Young (D-Baltimore County), Washington County Register of Wills Jason Malott, Howard County Register of Wills Byron McFarlane, former Kensington mayor Pete Fosselman, and brewery owner Julie Verratti, who ran unsuccessfully for lieutenant governor last year.

In mid-September, several mayors from across the country wrote an op-ed piece in USA Today endorsing their fellow mayor Buttigieg for president. Among the signatories: Salisbury Mayor Jacob Day, College Park Mayor Patrick Wojahn, and New Carrollton Mayor Duane Rosenberg.

The Maryland primary isn’t until April 28, and it isn’t clear whether it will matter in the presidential nominating process at that point. But campaigns are beginning to mobilize in the Free State.

A group of Maryland supporters for former vice president Joe Biden was formed several months ago, led by state Sen. James C. Rosapepe (D-Prince George’s) and Del. Erek L. Barron (D-Prince George’s), who worked for Biden when he was a U.S. senator.

Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders’ campaign is beginning to crank up in Maryland. And Maryland supporters of Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren have a rally scheduled for next Friday at the University of Maryland in College Park. That rally is expected to feature a roll-out of Warren’s Maryland endorsers.

The White House campaign of California’s Sen. Kamala Harris is headquartered in Baltimore, but it has been struggling financially, according to an article this week in Politico.
