Maryland residents strongly disapprove of the job Donald Trump is doing as president. And half now say he should be impeached.
A poll released Tuesday by Gonzales Research and Media Services found that Trump, who has never been popular in the state, continues to anger state residents.
Just 34 percent of those surveyed approve of the job he is doing, with 63 percent voicing disapproval.
Fully 50 percent now want Trump to face trial in the Senate, while 44 percent said they did not. Six percent did not answer.
Trump remains popular with Republicans in Maryland, who supported him by an 81 percent to 16 percent margin. Democrats, not surprisingly, opposed him — strongly in many cases — with 90 percent giving him thumbs down.
Among “unaffiliated,” or independent, voters, 38 percent approved and 54 disapproved of the embattled president’s handling of his job.
Trump is underwater among white and black residents, among young and old, and among men and women. He is particularly unpopular among residents of the Washington suburbs, where impeachment support is nearly 2-1.
Many D.C.-area residents have a direct connection to the federal government or know someone who does. Parts of the government are currently shut down over Trump’s demand for a wall on the southern border, an initiative congressional Democrats resist.
In sharp contrast to Trump is Gov. Lawrence J. Hogan Jr. (R), the just-reelected executive who continues to enjoy sky-high job approval numbers.
Among voters polled by Gonzales, 77 percent said they approve of the way he has handled his post. An astounding 48 percent “strongly approve.”
Only 18 percent voiced disapproval.
Even among Democrats (70-25) and independents (88-7), Hogan enjoyed massive public support.
“It doesn’t get any better than this for Hogan…of course, we’ve been saying that
for three years now,” pollster Patrick Gonzales observed.
Gonzales surveyed 809 registered voters between Dec. 28 and Jan. 4. The survey had a 3.5-point margin of error.
