Lawmakers do not yet know who will replace the late Del. Michael E. Busch (D) as House speaker, but they now have an idea of who will be joining them as a colleague by filling Busch’s House seat.
The Anne Arundel County Democratic Central Committee on Thursday night nominated Annapolis Ald. Shaneka Henson to take Busch’s District 30A seat.
Under state law, Gov. Lawrence J. Hogan Jr. (R) will formally make the appointment based on the central committee’s recommendation. It is not yet known how quickly the appointment will be made or when Henson will take office.
Henson, who was elected to the Annapolis City Council in 2017, was one of a dozen candidates to apply to fill the vacancy. If formally appointed, she’ll serve the remaining 3 ½ years of Busch’s term. Busch, who died on April 7, had served in the House since 1987 and as speaker since 2003.
Henson, 35, is an Annapolis native who received a B.S. degree from Coppin State University and a law degree from the University of Baltimore. She has worked for the Anne Arundel County State’s Attorney’s Office and the YWCA.
