A New Gig for Joel Rubin

Joel Rubin, the vice mayor of Chevy Chase who has run unsuccessfully for Congress and the House of Delegates in recent election cycles, has a new job.

The American Jewish Congress, a century-old advocacy group that promotes an array of initiatives on behalf of U.S. Jews, announced Tuesday that Rubin will become the organization’s new executive director.

Rubin worked in the State Department during the Obama administration and was outreach director to the Jewish community for Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders’ 2020 presidential campaign. He also worked on Capitol Hill for former Sens. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) and Frank Lautenberg (D-N.J.) and has done foreign policy consulting work.

Rubin ran unsuccessfully in the crowded 8th District Democratic congressional primary in 2016 and finished about 3,000 votes out of the money in the 2018 House of Delegates primary in District 18. He was elected to the Chevy Chase Town Council in 2017 and reelected last year. He’s up for a third term in 2021.

“This is such a dynamic moment right now for both the Jewish community and the United States, and it’s an incredible honor to be able to join this storied organization to help chart a path forward for our community on the critical issues facing our country,” Rubin said in a statement. “Now is the time to lean in on these issues, such as combating rising Antisemitism, promoting peace and security for Israel, and engaging in the fight for racial justice here at home.”
