Maryland Matters wins 10 awards from press association

Maryland Matters reporters and contributing writers were awarded for excellence this week by the Maryland-Delaware-District of Columbia Press Association.
In an awards ceremony that concluded Friday, Maryland Matters received the following awards in the association’s Division O, for online-only publications:
Best of Show Winner
- Elizabeth Shwe: “Inspired by the Death of a Veteran Firefighter, Bill Would Limit Exposure to Toxic Chemical in Fire Foam and Gear” in Medical/Science Reporting
First Place Winners
- Danielle E. Gaines: “Candidate Filing Deadline Creates Last-Second Drama” in Breaking News Photo
- Elizabeth Shwe: “Inspired by the Death of a Veteran Firefighter, Bill Would Limit Exposure to Toxic Chemical in Fire Foam and Gear” in Medical/Science Reporting

Additionally, Maryland Matters reporter Bryan Sears was honored for his previous work at The Daily Record, bringing home first-place awards for blog writing and state government coverage, and second-place awards for the Eye on Annapolis summit and webinar series.
News organizations competed in eight categories, depending on their size and medium. Maryland Matters competed in Division O, for online-only publications.
Overall, the press association gave out dozens of awards in an array of categories and divisions, from news and opinion writing to photos to page and ad design to video storytelling and blogging.
