House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (D) endorsed Democratic former state delegate Heather R. Mizeur’s 1st District congressional bid Wednesday, and said in a statement that she would be a “major asset” to the state’s congressional delegation if elected.

“During her time in Annapolis, Heather was known as a bold leader who worked tirelessly to tackle our state’s toughest challenges through bringing people together and building consensus,” Hoyer said in a Wednesday statement. “I know Heather’s values, I know her record, and I trust that her first priority in Congress will always be the people of her district.”

Hoyer is the fifth member of Maryland’s congressional delegation to endorse Mizeur. Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D) and Reps. Anthony G. Brown (D), Kewisi Mfume (D) and Jamie B. Raskin (D) have also endorsed Mizeur, alongside recently retired State Treasurer Nancy K. Kopp (D) and former 1st District Rep. Wayne Gilchrest (R).

“I’m honored that he has put his faith in me to win one of the most competitive House races of the election cycle, and it will be a distinct privilege to serve alongside him as a member of Maryland’s congressional delegation,” Mizeur said of Hoyer’s endorsement.

Incumbent Andrew P. Harris (R), Maryland’s lone congressional Republican, handily won reelection under previous district lines — but Democratic lawmakers recently redrew the 1st District to be significantly more competitive by crossing the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. In October, Mizeur’s campaign reported raising more than $1 million through the third quarter of 2021, boasting a record in the district at that point in an election cycle.

Mizeur’s Democratic primary opponents include R. David Harden, a foreign policy strategist, and Jennifer Pingley, an Upper Shore resident and registered nurse.
