From the Editor: Nonprofit Journalism Thrives with your Support

Dear Maryland Matters reader,

One of the greatest hacks I’ve found since becoming an editor at Maryland Matters and a mother almost simultaneously are kids cartoons with no dialogue — just sounds and music.

My daughter is distracted, and I can still take calls, watch hearings and carry on routine work responsibilities without a cacophony in the background.

Since I took over as leader of our nonprofit newsroom in May, I’ve joked that I’m now responsible for the livelihood of a toddler and a four-year-old, Maryland Matters.

It’s a lot to keep alive under one roof.  I don’t do any of it alone.

In addition to dedicated reporters, I count you as an essential part of my Maryland Matters team.

Maryland Matters is proud to be the site you turn to for critical news — since January, we’ve published more than 1,800 articles, analyses and commentaries.

We’ve written stories on the 2022 elections and redistricting and voting rights. Stories about educational equity and transportation, about health care and housing and the continuing fallout from the pandemic. And a special series on climate change led by Josh Kurtz, our founding editor.

If you’d like to help make sure we’re ready to report the crucial issues ahead — redistricting, the next General Assembly session and the 2022 elections — please consider a tax-deductible contribution.

This is a great time to give! Until Dec. 31, your contribution up to $1,000 will be doubled, thanks to a grant from NewsMatch, a national nonprofit designed to help independent nonprofit news sites like ours.

What’s more, if you start a new monthly recurring donation, NewsMatch will double the entire year’s amount.  So if you start a gift now of, say, $10 a month, NewsMatch will contribute $120.

Maryland Matters doesn’t run ads.  We don’t have a pay wall — we want our independent reporting to be available to as many people as possible.

What we do have are loyal supporters like you who make our work possible. For that, I am so grateful.

Fondly,

Danielle E. Gaines
Editor

P.S. As an independent nonprofit, Maryland Matters survives and thrives because of the generosity of people like you.  Please know that your tax-deductible contribution will be doubled until Dec. 31, thanks to a generous matching grant.  Thank you!

P.P.S. If you parents out there want cartoon recommendations, I’m here for that too!
