Following Barron’s Confirmation, Prince George’s House Delegation Elects New Chair
Del. Nick Charles (D) was unanimously elected as the new chair of the Prince George’s County House delegation this week, after former Del. Erek Barron was sworn in as the first Black U.S. Attorney for the state of Maryland.
“A lifelong resident of Prince George’s County … Delegate Charles has been committed to improving the community and preserving its rich culture as a civic and community leader and during his entire legislative career,” a delegation press release stated.
In a Facebook post, Charles said his election as chair was “surreal and such an honor all at the same time.”
“I want to thank my colleagues for putting their trust in me to navigate this large ship,” Charles wrote. “I look forward to the great work we will accomplish together as we prepare for this upcoming legislative session.”
The Prince George’s County Democratic Central Committee is expected to select a successor for Barron in District 24 in the next few weeks.
On Friday, that panel’s former chair, Cheryl S. Landis, was sworn in as the newest member of the House of Delegates. Landis, a former educator, will represent District 23B, which came open when then-Del. Ronald L. Watson was appointed to the state Senate.
