Raskin Endorses Lierman for Comptroller

Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) endorsed Del. Brooke E. Lierman (D-Baltimore City) for comptroller Monday, saying she would ensure the office is “the financial advocate for the people of Maryland.”

Raskin recalled his time working with Lierman in the General Assembly in an endorsement video. Raskin was a state senator until he was sworn in to Congress in 2017; Lierman was elected as a state delegate in 2015.

Raskin said he worked with Lierman in 2015 to pass the Second Chance Act, which allows people to shield records about certain criminal convictions from public view after their sentences to make it easier to get a job, attend college or access other services.

“I’m supporting her because we need somebody who’s a great comptroller, who uses the office as an instrument for advancing the public good for everybody,” Raskin said.

The endorsement is Raskin’s first of a statewide candidate in the 2022 election cycle, according to a release from Lierman. Lierman said in a statement that she “could not be more proud to earn his support.”

Raskin is the latest of many current elected officials to endorse Lierman’s comptroller bid. A slew of local leaders and lawmakers from across the state have also publicly supported her campaign, including Rep. Steny H. Hoyer (D-Md.)

Lierman is one of two declared Democrats vying for the open comptroller seat. Bowie Mayor and defense contractor Timothy J. Adams (D) is also on the ballot for the June 2022 Democratic primary. Harford County Executive Barry Glassman (R) remains the lone Republican in the race.

Current Comptroller Peter V.R. Franchot (D) is one of nine Democrats seeking the party’s nomination for governor in 2022.
