Howard County Executive Calvin Ball Seeks Reelection

Howard County Executive Calvin B. Ball III (D) launched his 2022 reelection campaign Tuesday.

Ball, who garnered a record-breaking 75,000 votes in his 2018 election, said in a press release that helping Howard County recover from the COVID-19 pandemic will be among his top priorities moving forward.

His actions during the COVID-19 pandemic are set to be an integral part of his campaign: Tuesday’s announcement highlights his early closures of public areas last year and his more recent drive to get county residents vaccinated. In May, Howard became the first county in the state to have 50% of its residents fully vaccinated.

“As we continue to progress on the road to recovery, we will ensure all residents are healthy and thriving following a global pandemic, we foster the best teaching and learning environment for our students and educators, local businesses continue to grow and prosper, and our environment is sustainable for generations to come,” Ball said in his announcement.

Ball’s reelection campaign will also focus on his efforts to boost Howard County’s schools, economy, and environment. His campaign announcement outlined a slew of initiatives he’s undertaken since his 2018 election, including sending $18 million in HoCo RISE Business Grants to local businesses amid the pandemic and investing millions into capital projects for schools.

There are no other announced 2022 Howard County Executive candidates at this time.

As of the annual campaign finance reporting deadline in mid-January, Ball had more than $691,000 in his campaign coffers.

Howard County is considered a swing county. Since 1990, voters have elected three Democrats and two Republicans for executive.
