Gov. Lawrence J. Hogan Jr. (R) on Wednesday announced the appointment of Judge Laura Sue Ripken to Maryland’s intermediate appellate court.
Ripken was nominated to a vacancy on the Court of Special Appeals after the retirement of Judge Timothy E. Meredith.
Ripken is the administrative judge for the Anne Arundel County Circuit Court; she had been presiding over the Capital Gazette murder trial.
Since January 2019, Ripken has also served as the chair of the Conference of Circuit Court Judges.
Before being appointed to the bench in 2010, Ripken served 19 years as a county prosecutor and deputy state’s attorney.
“The appointment of qualified individuals to serve across our state’s justice system is paramount to upholding our responsibilities to the people of Maryland and the rule of law,” Hogan said in a statement. “I have confidence that Laura Ripken will continue to be a strong advocate for the law and will serve the citizens of the State of Maryland admirably.”
