On Track to Vaccinate 90% of Frontline Hospital Workers, Md. Will Provide Vaccines to NIH

More than 104,000 doses of Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine, which was authorized by the Food and Drug Administration on Friday, have been sent to Maryland and the state should have enough doses to vaccinate 90% of frontline medical workers by the end of the week.

Gov. Lawrence J. Hogan Jr. (R) announced the shipment of 104,300 doses of the Moderna vaccine on Monday. The shipment is in addition to more than 86,000 Pfizer vaccine doses allocated to the state over the past two weeks.

The vaccines are being distributed to every hospital in the state, based on the total number of high-risk staff reported to the Maryland Hospital Association. With this week’s shipment, the state’s total allocation is enough to vaccinate about 90% of front line hospital staff. State health officials anticipate that the remainder of front line hospital staff will be covered by next week’s allocations.

State health officials have entered agreements to provide vaccines at nursing home and assisted living facilities. CVS and Walgreens locations are providing the Pfizer vaccine to nursing home residents and staff, and expect to begin vaccination clinics later this week.

Additionally, each local health department will receive an initial 100-dose shipment of the Moderna vaccine to test the state’s logistics chain, and local health officers are encouraged to begin vaccinating their vaccination teams as soon as possible.

Also on Monday, Hogan announced that the state will provide 2,300 doses from its Moderna vaccine allotment to front line clinical health care workers at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda.

“Maryland is proud to be home to some of the world’s leading health systems and medical research institutions, including NIH,” said Hogan. “With our earliest vaccinations focused on high-risk populations, we are providing a limited number of doses to NIH in order to vaccinate these Maryland-based front line healthcare workers.”
