Teachers’ Union Gets New Political and Legislative Affairs Director
Pokuaa Owusu-Acheaw is leaving her job as intergovernmental affairs officer to Prince George’s County Executive Angela D. Alsobrooks (D) to become managing director of political and legislative affairs for the Maryland State Education Association.
Owusu-Acheaw is taking over the position that had been held for a decade by Sean Johnson, who was promoted to become the teachers’ union’s executive director in September.
“As a child of a retired union educator, education and equity are close to my heart. Every child should have access to quality education, regardless of their zip code,” Owusu said in a Facebook post Monday.
Owusu-Acheaw, an attorney who grew up in Prince George’s County, joined Alsobrooks’ administration in December 2018, when Alsobrooks became county executive. She has also served as Prince George’s County regional director for U.S. Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) and as chief of staff to state Sen. Joanne C. Benson (D-Prince George’s).
“I am excited to see her lead our incredible government relations and political team to new heights,” Johnson said on Facebook.
