Hogan Appoints Dana Jones as New Anne Arundel Delegate

Gov. Lawrence J. Hogan Jr. (R) appointed Dana Jones (D) to the House of Delegates on Thursday.

Jones is replacing former Del. Alice J. Cain (D-Anne Arundel) in District 30A following Cain’s resignation at the end of the abbreviated 2020 legislative session last month.

“I am confident that Ms. Jones will be a strong advocate for her constituents in Anne Arundel in her new role as state delegate,” Hogan said in a statement.

Cain said that she stepped down due to unexpected family circumstances, a decision she told House Speaker Adrienne A. Jones (D-Baltimore County) in a letter was “extremely difficult.”

Jones was nominated to the District 30A seat by the Anne Arundel County Democratic Central Committee last week after nearly six and a half hours of virtual interviews with 19 applicants. She’ll represent Annapolis and the surrounding area.

During her interview, Jones called herself a “homegrown Maryland girl,” noting that she has over 20 years of experience working with the state’s Democratic Party. She said that she was supported by Anne Arundel County Executive Steuart Pittman’s (D) campaign staff in her decision to run, and hopes to serve on the House Ways and Means Committee.

Jones told Anne Arundel County Democratic Central Committee members that the top issues facing District 30A surround environmental protection, access to education and health care, protection for small businesses and COVID-19 recovery.

During her interview, Jones explained that despite Maryland’s General Assembly fully functioning for only part of the year, this is a job she would take on year-round to help her constituents connect to services that they need.

“This isn’t just a voting job, this is a constituent service job,” she said.

Jones is the current vice president of communications for the Junior League of Annapolis, and formerly served as the research director for EMILY’s List and as a legislative aide to then-U.S. Rep. (now Sen.) Benjamin L. Cardin (D-Md.).
