‘I Voted’ Sticker Winners Hail From Montgomery, Queen Anne’s Counties

From left to right, the winning “I Voted” sticker designs from Amelia Avila, Anna Ruhlen and Cara Brown. Designs courtesy of the Maryland State Board of Elections and the Fine Arts Office of the Maryland State Department of Education.

Three young artists in Maryland will have their work displayed all around the state next year: on the lapels of dogwalkers and bus riders and businesspeople everywhere.

The three students designed new takes on the iconic “I Voted” stickers handed out on Election Day, all with uniquely Maryland twists.

The winners of a statewide contest that drew 650 submissions and more than 28,000 votes from the public are:

Amelia Avila from Olney Elementary School in Montgomery County, Anna Ruhlen from Tilden Middle School in Montgomery County, and Cara Brown from Queen Anne’s County High School.

Amelia’s design features the state flag and other icons including the Black-Eyed Susan, and state fauna: an oriole, blue crab and a racing horse.

Anna’s design features a state flag surrounded by red, white and blue ribbons and icons of election day including ballots and polling symbols.

Cara’s design shows the state and American flags in the breeze near the Bay Bridge.

The winning designs were chosen through a statewide contest hosted by the Maryland State Board of Elections and the Fine Arts Office of the Maryland State Department of Education. The three designs will be distributed at voting locations throughout the state next year.

Winning student artists will receive a $100 gift card for new arts supplies, and their art teacher will receive $500 to purchase art supplies or equipment for their school or community art program.
