Coppin State University will have a new president in May.
University System of Maryland Chancellor Robert L. Caret announced Monday the appointment of Anthony Jenkins, current president of West Virginia State University, a historically black college near Charleston, W.Va.
Jenkins’ appointment to lead Coppin State will be effective May 26.
At West Virginia State, Jenkins established global partnerships with countries around the world and led the campus during a period of enrollment growth and expanded educational programs in nursing and engineering.
“The [University System of Maryland] board is delighted to have such an accomplished leader to guide Coppin. This appointment is a critical one, not just for the University System of Maryland but for the greater Baltimore region and beyond,” Board of Regents Chairwoman Linda Gooden said in a statement. “Coppin State University is a vital institution in the City of Baltimore and our state.”
Coppin State, a historically black university, is an urban liberal arts campus in northwest Baltimore with 33 majors and 12 graduate degree programs.
“I am honored that the University System of Maryland Board of Regents has appointed me to be the next president of Coppin State University,” Jenkins said in a statement. “This is an exciting opportunity to guide a university with a strong legacy and do so at an important time for the City of Baltimore, where Coppin is so integral to the city’s continued vibrancy and success.”
Jenkins will succeed interim president Mickey Burnim, the former Bowie State University president who has been leading the institution since former Coppin State president Maria Thompson ended her service at Coppin on June 30.
Jenkins served in the U.S. Army and was a first-generation college graduate of Fayetteville State University. He later earned a master’s degree from North Carolina Central University and a doctorate from Virginia Tech University.
