Funeral, Tributes Set for Cummings in Baltimore, U.S. Capitol

The funeral for the late U.S. Rep. Elijah E. Cummings (D-Md.), who died Thursday at the age of 68, will take place next Friday at the New Psalmist Baptist Church in Lochearn, where he worshipped for decades.

But there will be other memorials for the 12-term congressman leading up to the funeral.

Cummings’ body will lie in repose at Morgan State University, in the Murphy Fine Arts Center, on Wednesday. There will be a public viewing from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., followed by a tribute celebration from 6-8 p.m.

Cummings will lie in state Thursday in Statuary Hall in the U.S. Capitol, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) has announced. A memorial ceremony for members of Congress and Cummings’ family will take place in the morning, followed by a public viewing.

On Friday, a public viewing of the congressman’s casket will take place at New Psalmist Baptist Church from 8-10 a.m., followed by the funeral. Bishop Walter S. Thomas Jr., the pastor of New Psalmist and a close Cummings friend, will deliver the eulogy. It is not clear yet whether there will be other speakers.

Burial arrangements for the congressman are also pending.
