Rep. Brown in Central America With Pelosi-Led Delegation

U.S. Rep. Anthony G. Brown (D-Md.) landed in Guatemala with about a dozen colleagues on Thursday, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.).

It’s part of a congressional delegation trip to the so-called Northern Triangle – Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras.

Several congressional lawmakers have already been to the Texas-Mexico border during the August recess – as this delegation will, to visit a detention facility – but Pelosi’s office said they wanted to visit these Central American countries to examine the root causes of immigration and attempt to address the crisis at the border.

The trip. Pelosi said in a statement, is aimed at “helping empower the people of the Northern Triangle to build a better future at home.”

Brown, whose Prince George’s/Anne Arundel County district has a steadily growing Latino population, said he and his colleagues want the U.S. to establish “a real partnership and a whole-of-government approach to help deliver on the promise of prosperity, security and governance for the people across Central America.”

“We can both treat migrants from Central America with dignity and provide the support to make the Northern Triangle of Central America a more prosperous and secure place to call home,” Brown, who is vice chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, added.

Joining Pelosi and Brown on the trip are House Foreign Relations Chairman Elliot Engel (D-N.Y.), and Reps. Nydia Velázquez (D-N.Y.), Jim McGovern (D-Mass.), Lucille Roybal-Allard (D-Calif.), Henry Cuellar (D-Texas), Aumua Amata Coleman Radewagen (R-American Samoa), Norma Torres (D-Calif.), Mary Gay Scanlon (D-Pa.), Jesús “Chuy” García (D-Ill.), Katie Hill (D-Calif.), and Lauren Underwood (D-Ill.).
