Baltimore Forum to Tackle Dangers of Coal Power

On Tuesday, the Maryland Sierra Club and Our Revolution Baltimore will host a Baltimore Beyond Coal forum with public health and social justice advocates highlighting the impacts coal power in Maryland has on the city.

It’s part of the Maryland Sierra Club’s launch of what’s being called the Coal Community Transition Campaign, to wean the state’s electric grid off of coal.

The Coal Community Transition Campaign’s goal is to secure specific, enforceable dates for the retirement of Maryland’s six remaining coal plants, while creating a Coal Community Transition Fund to provide financial and job training support for coal plant workers, as well as investments in communities impacted by coal plants.

The environmental group is expected to begin rolling out details of the plan this week.

The forum is taking place Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Walkers Mews Apartments, 6225 York Rd. in Baltimore. Scheduled speakers include state Del. Robbyn T. Lewis (D-Baltimore City); the Maryland Sierra Club’s Matt Dernoga; Joshua Harris, vice chair of the Baltimore NAACP Branch; and Kirsten Koehler, Associate Professor at John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.
