Some “breaking news” landed Saturday in the email in-boxes of supporters of U.S. Rep. David J. Trone (D-Md.).
“Some major news out of Alabama,” the freshman congressman writes. “Roy Moore is running for Senate in 2020.”
Trone, one of the wealthiest members of Congress, goes on to solicit donations for U.S. Sen. Doug Jones (D-Ala.), who is seeking a full Senate term in 2020 after defeating Moore in a turbulent 2017 special election.
Moore is a former state Supreme Court chief justice in Alabama whose campaign was derailed by reports that he sexually assaulted and harassed teenaged girls when he was in his 30s.
National Republican leaders have made it clear that they do not want Moore to be their nominee again. One of Trone’s colleagues, Rep. Bradley Byrne, is among the half dozen candidates seeking the Republican Senate nomination.
“Alabama is going to be one of the closest U.S. Senate races in the country,” Trone writes. “We cannot sit idly by if there is ANY chance of Roy Moore becoming a Senator.
“That’s why we need all hands on deck to help re-elect Senator Doug Jones. Doug Jones is an outstanding Senator who shares our progressive values and holding his seat is crucial to winning back the Senate in 2020.
“House Democrats have passed sweeping legislation on ethics reform, pay equity, gun violence, and climate change. But if we want to really move the needle, we need to take back the Senate, where these bills are stalled in Mitch McConnell’s ‘legislative graveyard.’”
Trone’s email missive contains four links to contribute to Jones’ campaign via the Democratic fundraising website ActBlue.
