McCray Sworn in as Newest Baltimore City Council Member

Baltimore City has already had its share of political dynasties: The D’Alessandros. The Bostons. The Rawlingses. The Currans. The Conaways.

Now add to that list the McCrays.

The Baltimore City Council on Tuesday unanimously voted to appoint Danielle McCray to fill the 2nd District seat of Council President Brandon M. Scott (D), who had moved over to the Council’s top job a month ago after the former Council president, Bernard C. “Jack” Young (D), ascended to mayor. Immediately after the Council vote, McCray was sworn in by Young.

McCray had been the choice of a nominating committee that met late last month. She is a former aide to Scott – and the sister of state Sen. Cory V. McCray (D-Baltimore City).

“The communities of northeast Baltimore know me well; as a constituent and legislative aide working in this office, I’ve poured everything I have into everything I’ve done, treating every constituent matter as if it were my own,” Dani McCray said in a statement. “I’m grateful for the opportunity to continue providing world-class constituent services and leadership on crucial policy matters in the areas of public safety, education, and equitable economic growth.”

She will serve the remainder of Scott’s term, which runs through December 2020, and will presumably seek a full term next year.

Cory McCray, the new Council member’s older brother, attended the swearing-in and was moved by what he saw. He said that while his sister had attended several community events with him through the years, “I never thought a day like this would come.”
